7v7 · 1-3-2-1

3-2-1 formation

The 1-3-2-1 is a 7v7 formation with one goalkeeper, a back three, two central midfielders and one striker. One centre midfielder drops between the two centre backs to form the back three, leaving two players ahead of him to link the defence to a lone striker.

When to use the 3-2-1

It is the counterweight to the 1-2-3-1. Use it when your opponent has a technical striker who will punish a thin back line, or when your own players are better defensively than they are in possession. Three of your six outfield players sit behind the ball, which is unusual in 7v7 and genuinely hard to attack.

Strengths

  • Three players between the ball and your goal, which is the only formation here that gives 7v7 a genuine defensive block.
  • The dropped midfielder shields the space between the two centre backs, exactly where 7v7 turnovers happen.
  • Two central midfielders give you a double pivot that can cover both halves of the pitch.

Risks

  • With only two players ahead of the back three, you will spend long periods without a reference point.
  • Both central midfielders are close together, so a wide switch of play can pull them out of position.
  • Harder to score from settled play — this shape needs the ball wide to work.

Key roles to coach

Left 6

Does not play like a midfielder in this shape. They drop to form the back three, which means they rarely get a touch and must cover the most space on the pitch. Pick your most disciplined outfield player.

Attacking Midfielder

The only player between the pivot and the striker, so they carry the whole attacking transition. Their first touch decides whether the shape works.

Centre Backs

Wide and high in this shape, because the dropped midfielder covers behind them. They must be comfortable defending space rather than facing the player.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1-3-2-1 formation?

The 1-3-2-1 is a seven-a-side formation consisting of one goalkeeper, a back three, two central midfielders and one striker. One of the nominal midfielders drops between the two centre backs, so the shape actually deploys three players behind the ball and only two in front of it.

Is 1-3-2-1 better than 1-2-3-1 for 7v7?

Choose 1-3-2-1 against strong attacking teams, because three players behind the ball closes the central lanes. Choose 1-2-3-1 when you need to create, because three attacking midfielders give you far more options in the final third than one midfielder and a striker.

Which player is most important in a 1-3-2-1?

The dropped midfielder who forms the back three. They cover the largest area of any outfield player in this shape, rarely receive the ball, and are the reason the formation holds together defensively.
