7v7 · 1-2-3-1
2-3-1 formation
The 1-2-3-1 is a 7v7 formation with one goalkeeper, two centre backs, three attacking midfielders and one striker. The single striker holds the top, the wide wingers sit level with the central midfielder, and the two centre backs hold a narrow base behind them.
When to use the 2-3-1
Reach for it when your team is young and technically confident but short of numbers in midfield. Because there are only six outfield players, adding one more midfielder costs you a forward, and most 7v7 teams feel short of bodies in the middle long before they feel short of attackers. It suits a team that wants to keep three players available to recover a ball in the middle third.
Roles in the 2-3-1
| Line | Roles |
|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Goalkeeper (#1) |
| Defence | Left Center Back (#4), Right Center Back (#5) |
| Wide | Left Wing (#11 / 3), Right Wing (#7 / 2) |
| Midfield | Attacking Midfielder (#10) |
| Attack | Striker (#9) |
Strengths
- Three players between the halfway line and the box, so a turnover does not instantly become a shot.
- Wide wingers give you two natural outlets without spending a full extra midfield line.
- Simple to teach — a child can name the three players in front of the ball without being told twice.
Risks
- Only two players behind the ball means a single pass through the middle leaves you two-v-one.
- The striker is isolated; if they are not comfortable receiving with their back to goal, the formation stalls.
- Wingers dropping to help leaves large gaps on the flanks, and 7v7 pitches are small enough that those gaps are reachable.
Key roles to coach
Attacking Midfielder
Does the real work. Sits between the wingers, receives first, and decides whether the ball goes wide or forward. If this player is uncomfortable facing their own goal, the shape falls apart.
Left Wing
Holds a wide starting position but is expected to come inside when the full pitch is not available — the pitch in 7v7 is narrow enough that "wide" still means helping the centre.
Centre Backs
Play as a unit and stay narrow. Their job is to stop the first forward pass, not to win the ball.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 1-2-3-1 formation?
The 1-2-3-1 is a seven-a-side formation made of one goalkeeper, two centre backs, three attacking midfielders and one striker. The three midfielders sit ahead of the two defenders and behind the striker, which makes it the most common shape in 7v7 because it spreads six outfield players across the width of a small pitch.
Is 1-2-3-1 better than 1-3-2-1 for 7v7?
It depends on your midfielders. 1-3-2-1 puts three players behind the ball and is safer against turnovers; 1-3-2-1 drops the left midfielder next to the centre backs, so you commit a defender to the middle. Choose 1-2-3-1 if your wide players are your best passers, and 1-3-2-1 if your strongest players are central.
How many players are in a 1-2-3-1?
Seven in total: one goalkeeper and six outfield players. Of those six, two are defenders, three are attacking midfielders and one is a striker.
