11v11 · 1-5-3-2
5-3-2 formation
The 5-3-2 is an eleven-a-side shape with one goalkeeper, five defenders, a midfield three and two forwards, so ten outfield players sit in three lines. It is built to protect the two forwards: a back five wins the ball or clears it long, and the midfield three handles the second ball.
When to use the 5-3-2
Use it against a possession side, or in a knockout game where a clean sheet matters far more than control of the ball. Your Left Back (#3) and Right Back (#2) operate as wingers in possession and as defenders in a low block, while the Center Midfielder (#8) protects the space in front of the back five. The trade-off is progression: with five players behind the ball, clearing is the first plan rather than the last resort.
Roles in the 5-3-2
| Line | Roles |
|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Goalkeeper (#1) |
| Defence | Left Back (#3), Left Center Back (#4), Center Back (#5), Right Center Back (#6), Right Back (#2) |
| Midfield | Left Wing Midfielder (#11), Center Midfielder (#8), Right Wing Midfielder (#7) |
| Attack | Left Forward (#11), Right Forward (#9) |
Strengths
- Five defenders make it very difficult for the opposition to play through the middle.
- Two forwards hunt the same channels and keep the opposition back line occupied.
- The wing backs cover the wide areas without the fullbacks being dragged out of shape.
Risks
- Very little happens in the opposition half, so chances are rare and ugly.
- With only three midfielders out there, clearing often means losing the second ball.
- Wing backs pushed high leave gaps if the side is counter-attacked through the middle.
Key roles to coach
Center Midfielder (#8)
He is the pivot of a back-five-plus-three structure and the first target of every long clearance. His work rate decides whether the second ball falls to your forwards or the opposition midfield.
Left Back (#3)
He is a winger when you have the ball and a fullback when you do not, and he must be able to do both without a transition error. That demand is the main reason this shape fails with certain players.
Right Center Back (#6)
He steps out of the five to meet the opposition nine in behind the front three. His recovery pace matters more than his heading, because the whole back line turns to chase when he is wrong-footed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 5-3-2 formation?
It is an eleven-a-side structure of one goalkeeper, five defenders, three midfielders and two forwards. Ten outfield players sit in three lines, and the back five is the primary way the side wins the ball, either by outplaying the opposition or by clearing.
Is a 5-3-2 better than a 3-5-2?
The 5-3-2 is harder to break down centrally because you have five behind the ball. The 3-5-2 is much better at building and controlling possession, because three centre backs and two wing backs let you pass out. Choose the 5-3-2 to defend, the 3-5-2 to dominate.
How do you build out from a back five?
Wedge the back five with the Center Midfielder (#8) so you have a passing triangle, then let the Left Back (#3) or Right Back (#2) carry forward when the opposition front three press. Do not clear blindly, or you hand them the ball twice.
