3-5-2 formation

The 3-5-2 is an eleven-a-side shape with one goalkeeper, three centre backs, a midfield five and two forwards, so ten outfield players sit in three lines. It combines the defensive strength of a back three with two wing backs who turn the midfield five into a three in possession.

When to use the 3-5-2

Use it when you want to control the ball and still keep a spare defender in behind the front line. Your Left Wing Midfielder (#11) and Right Wing Midfielder (#3) become wing backs when defending, so the three centre backs cover each other rather than chasing runners forward. The trade-off is the centre pair: the Left Defensive Midfielder (#6) and Right Defensive Midfielder (#7) can be pinned by one creative midfielder, which opens up both half-spaces.

Strengths

  • Three centre backs cover for each other, so stepping up rarely opens the middle.
  • Two wing backs give genuine width in possession without a flat four of defenders.
  • Two forwards stay high and pin the opposition centre backs for long spells.

Risks

  • Wing backs pinned high leave channels open for a quick opposition winger.
  • The two centre midfielders can be overloaded by a three against them.
  • Slow circulation from the back invites pressure that only resolves with a long clear.

Key roles to coach

Center Back (#5)

He anchors the back three and decides which side they lean, which lets the Left Center Back (#4) and Right Center Back (#6) step without losing cover. His first pass often starts the build.

Left Defensive Midfielder (#6)

He and the Right Defensive Midfielder (#7) form a flat four in front of the back three when defending. Whoever steps forward leaves a gap that the wing backs must cover from wide.

Right Wing Midfielder (#3)

He is the extra player that makes this shape work, providing width in possession and the last line of defence down the flank. He must accept a heavy workload, so rotate him if you can.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 3-5-2 formation?

It is an eleven-a-side structure of one goalkeeper, three centre backs, five midfielders and two forwards. Ten outfield players sit in three lines, with two of the midfielders operating as wing backs so that the side keeps a back three in defence.

What is the difference between a 3-5-2 and a 5-3-2?

The lines are reversed in emphasis. The 5-3-2 has five defenders and three midfielders, so the five defend and clear. The 3-5-2 has three defenders and five midfielders, so you build out through the wing backs and control possession.

How do you attack with wing backs as wide players?

Push both wing backs high for width, then have the Left Defensive Midfielder (#6) and Right Defensive Midfielder (#7) drop into a flat four in front of the back three. The forwards stay central, so the crosses come from wide and cutbacks come from the second line.
