9v9 · 1-3-3-2
3-3-2 formation
The 1-3-3-2 is a nine-a-side shape of one goalkeeper, three centre backs, a midfield three and two forwards, so eight outfield players form a back three, a balanced trio and a front pair. It is the 9v9 structure closest to the full-sided 3-5-2.
When to use the 3-3-2
Use it when you have three players who will defend as a unit. Your Left Center Back (#4), Center Back (#5) and Right Center Back (#6) shift together and cover for each other, which lets the Left Center Midfielder (#6) and Right Center Midfielder (#8) push into the opposition half. The trade-off is that the wide channels are held by your centre backs, so a quick winger on the outside of a fullback can pull the shape and create a two-a-side.
Roles in the 3-3-2
| Line | Roles |
|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Goalkeeper (#1) |
| Defence | Left Center Back (#4), Center Back (#5), Right Center Back (#6) |
| Midfield | Left Center Midfielder (#6), Holding Midfielder (#4), Right Center Midfielder (#8) |
| Attack | Left Forward (#11), Right Forward (#9) |
Strengths
- The back three cover for each other, so a stepping centre back rarely leaves a gap.
- Two forwards press the opposition centre backs and stop them building comfortably.
- A holding midfielder behind the two centre halves gives you a genuine rest defence.
Risks
- Wide forwards can stretch the back three until the channels between them open up.
- One Holding Midfielder (#4) cannot cover both channels if two forwards break at once.
- Pushing all three midfielders forward leaves the counter exposed to two runners.
Key roles to coach
Holding Midfielder (#4)
He is the player who makes the back three feel like a back four, covering the space between the centre backs and breaking up second balls. When he steps forward, the shape loses its protection.
Center Back (#5)
He anchors the back three and decides which way the line leans. His body position tells the Left Center Back (#4) and Right Center Back (#6) whether to hold or step.
Left Forward (#11)
He and the Right Forward (#9) give you the only out ball, so their pressing determines how quickly you regain territory. They should attack the outside of the opposition centre backs, not stand shoulder to shoulder.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 1-3-3-2 formation?
It is a nine-a-side structure of one goalkeeper, three centre backs, three central midfielders and two forwards. Eight outfield players sit in three lines, combining the defensive security of a back three with a midfield three that can step forward together.
Is a 1-3-3-2 better than a 1-2-4-2 at 9v9?
The 1-3-3-2 gives you three central midfielders against the opposition pair, so you control the middle. The 1-2-4-2 gives you width from the wide midfielders instead. Choose the back three when you are the side under pressure, the flat four when you want to stretch them.
How do you stop a counter against a 1-3-3-2?
Keep a forward high as cover and keep one centre half back at all times. Two of the three midfielders can advance, but the Holding Midfielder (#4) must stay behind the ball until the move is dead, otherwise the back three faces two runners with nobody screening.
